“Have you seen the news?”

I roll onto my side and feel around my nightstand for the television remote in the dark, knocking down a bottle of water and pushing my watch to the floor before finding it.

“What channel?” I ask in a voice thick with sleep.

“CNN, MSNBC, BBC, FOX, Bloomberg—all of them. I’m sure this shit has hit TMZ and BuzzFeed by now,” Wilder says to the sounds of coffee brewing in the background of the phone call. “Get out of bed. We need to get to the office before the market opens.”

The television screen glows neon blue before the picture appears and the sound is too loud this early in the morning. I squint against the blinding light until my eyes adjust then smash the volume button down to a whisper before it wakes Lydia. She was sick the entire drive home from the restaurant last night, resting with her head in my lap while Dawn drove us home.

The twenty-four hours news cycle is reporting a segment on a high-tech bird feeder changing the way avid bird watchers observe and, therefore, conserve their natural habitats. “Good morning, sweetheart.” Dawn closes her planner and gets up, taking her mug to the sink. “I hope you don’t mind that I borrowed this robe. It’s not like I packed an overnight bag. Did I wake you?”

After we arrived home last night, I briefly considered letting her take the car, but offered her a place to stay in the guest room instead. I didn’t like the idea of her alone in her apartment after what happened during Nico’s birthday dinner, and she kindly agreed.

“No, my brother did that.” I grab a bottled water from the fridge and unscrew the cap, eyes fixed on her as I drink. “Are you okay, Dawn? After last night?”

Her shoulders drop, and she exhales as she rinses out the cup and lays it facedown on the counter to dry. “That sure was something. What I was most afraid of was those little boys waking up in the middle of it. But, yes, I’m doing just fine. I have a lot of work to keep me busy today.”

I nod. “What do you do for Lydia again?”

“A little of everything.” She perks up, excited to talk about her work. “I
